Quarter 2 Syllabus

Visual Arts Syllabus

Quarter 2

Goals: Students will explore the principles of design and elements of art throughout the quarter. In depth focus will include the concepts of movement, rhythm, and pattern. These concepts will be explored through weekly activities which will address each topic and use thereof, for an effective composition. Students will be using these ideas and concepts in their final portfolio project as both original artworks and as the background designs for each page layout.

Literacy: Writing and reading will consist of journal entries, responses to historic art styles, and research skills on the topic of the Harlem Renaissance. Rough drafts, outlines, and summarizing skills will be enhanced, as well as a persuasive writing piece. Design choices made by the student will be documented as part of the reflection piece and will be ongoing throughout the quarter.

Quarter Project: Research and Respond is a six page art piece which is a commentary on the life of one of the Harlem Renaissance artists. This culminating project will show effective use of the targeted principles of design, original art by the student, and responses to the research learned this quarter. An original design/ drawing, will be included as the main art component for assessment. The piece will be a visual response to their artists' artwork they have studied for the project. Students may choose to abstract all or part of the original design that they have chosen to study.

Media: Students will use a mixed media approach to complete this portfolio project. Design elements include effective use of value in watercolor, color theory, collage, and page design, in their composition. Studio empahasis will be assessed based on the principles of movement, rhythm, and pattern throughout the 6 page layout.
